Poster Illustration for Kids: “Zeit Punkt Lesen”

zeitpunkt-lesen-poster-illustration

I had the great opportunity to create a poster illustration for kids as well as a sticker card for Lower Austria’s reading initiative for kids, “Zeit Punkt Lesen”. The theme was travelling and exploring, and I had a blast creating it in Illustrator and Photoshop.

I came up with the idea of a poster that showed a kid reading a book and different fantastic figures joining him in the reading adventure: a lion to a pilot, a kraken, a pirate, a snake and a mummy.

I also created a sticker that featured the characters which was handed out to students, schools and libraries around Lower Austria. My hope is that kids will see my poster and stickers and be inspired to set off on their own literary adventures.

The Illustration process with the client

When it comes to illustration, I like to keep things flexible. I’ve learned that the best way to get the perfect illustration is to give the client a few options to choose from. So, I always start by sketching out a few rough ideas. I send these sketches to the client and ask for their feedback. Based on the feedback, I make a few changes and then finish the illustration. This process might take a little longer, but it’s always worth it in the end. Plus, it’s just more fun this way. After all, illustration should be fun!

Combining Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop

I first did the vector illustration in Adobe Illustrator and added finishing touches and textures in Photoshop. I wanted to make something that would appeal to them and be visually interesting. I think the vector illustration really helped to make the poster pop. And the finishing touches in Photoshop gave it an organic feeling that I think kids will enjoy.  I used a Wacom tablet to add some final details like wrinkles in the fabric of the character’s clothes. I’m really happy with how it turned out!

Illustrating for a reading initiative

One of the best things about this illustration project was to contribute to getting kids interested in reading, with a special focus on travelling, learning more about the world and being curious like a scientist. The topic focused on the time of big discoveries, where people learned a lot about nature, the stars, countries, cultures and different societies. I think it’s safe to say that most of us can agree that reading is pretty great. But what’s even greater is getting kids excited about reading from a young age. And what’s even greater than that? Getting kids excited about reading, with a special focus on travelling and learning more about the world. That’s what this illustration project was all about. And I think it was a resounding success. Thanks for letting me be a part of it!
